Symbolism

Shield.  A silver chevron descends from above, striking the top of the anvil, illustrating the fleeting but dynamic moment of integration where N8 performs its duties. The gold rays emanating out from the strike convey both the national and naval prosperity that occurs as a result of the N8’s work.  The anvil is a vital component in the practice of blacksmithing and here serves as a representation of the tools required to transform national resources into sea power. Surrounding the anvil, the three stars denote the N8 as a three-star principal official in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations.  The colors dark blue and white are ones traditionally associated with the United States Navy, while the wavy pattern decorating the division of the shield refers to the waves of the ocean.

Crest.  The trident refers to the Navy’s warfighting advantage in the maritime domain, and is the classic emblem for a strong command of the seas.

Scroll.  The Latin motto, ABSQUE COPIIS OMINA CADUCA,” translates to “WITHOUT RESOURCES, ALL EFFORTS ARE FUTILE,” and is representative of N8’s mission of transforming the resources of the nation into naval power.  The colors silver and gold refer to the precious metals and here denote vital resources and wealth of the nation.  When used together, silver and gold are used to denote an organization that has fiscal responsibilities.

Seal.  The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a circular light blue background, edged with a gold chain border, enclosed by a dark blue designation band edged on the outside with a gold rope, inscribed, DCNO FOR INTEGRATION OF CAPABILITIES AND RESOURCESaround the band and “N8” at the base, between two discs, all in white. The chain encircling the center of the seal further portrays the strong links between shipmates and co-workers, as well as the connections between N8 and partner organizations across the Navy and the Federal government.
